Kenya — Market Movers Today, Read From a Nairobi Desk
The day’s biggest moves, and the two adjustments - clock and currency - that turn them into something actionable from Kenya. Refreshed daily.
Crude Oil
Crude is the line on this page with the most direct Kenyan consequence: refined product is imported, so a sustained move here reaches the pump long before it reaches a chart.

Trade Crude Oil with IC Markets →US Dollar
The dollar matters twice over from Nairobi. It prices most instruments quoted here, and it is the currency an IC Markets account is most likely denominated in, since the shilling is not one of the ten available.

Also worth watching
US index CFDs run on the New York clock, so the active hours land in the Kenyan evening rather than the Kenyan working day.

Gold is the most expensive symbol to carry on a Swap Free account: a flat USD 62 for every lot held through the rollover.

How a Nairobi desk should read the numbers above
Every quote on this page is a global one, timestamped by the wire that carried it, and none of it is priced in shillings. Two adjustments turn it into something a trader in Kenya can act on. The first is the clock. East Africa Time is UTC+3 and never moves - Kenya has kept no daylight saving since 1960 - while the venues that set these prices do move. MetaTrader accounts at IC Markets are served from Equinix NY4 in New York, 8 hours behind Nairobi in the northern winter and 7 in summer; cTrader is served from London, 3 hours behind and then 2. The headline you are reading over breakfast was usually made overnight, and the session that will decide the rest of the day has not started yet.
The second adjustment is currency. Everything here quotes in dollars, and IC Markets settles accounts in one of ten base currencies - USD, AUD, EUR, GBP, SGD, NZD, JPY, CHF, HKD or CAD. The shilling is not among them. So a percentage move on this page is a move on your dollar equity, and the shilling value of that equity moves separately, on a rate no broker page quotes and no chart here shows.
The Nairobi day against the sessions that set these prices
| What is trading | Local time in Nairobi (EAT, UTC+3) | Why it matters from here |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo hours | Roughly 03:00 to 09:00 | Winds down as the Kenyan working day starts; the overnight gap is already in the price by the time you look |
| Nairobi Securities Exchange | 09:00 to 15:00 | The only session on your own clock - and the one that prices none of the instruments above |
| London | From about 10:00 or 11:00, depending on British summer time | Where metals and the major currency pairs find depth; your cTrader server sits in this city |
| New York | From about 16:30 or 17:30, depending on US daylight saving | The busiest hours land after the Nairobi exchange has closed; your MetaTrader server sits in this time zone |
Because Kenya observes no daylight saving, every one of these overlaps shifts by an hour twice a year without your own clock changing. Read the real server time off the terminal, especially near a Higher Margin Requirement window, when the leverage available to you is temporarily cut.
Three things a headline cannot tell you from Kenya
Which company holds the account. The Capital Markets Authority register at licensees.cma.or.ke lists IC Markets (KE) Limited under licence number 199, while the broker's own registration feed sends a Kenyan resident to Raw Trading Ltd of the Seychelles, licence SD018, as the default branch. Those are different companies and only one of them answers to the CMA.
How the money would arrive. The broker's funding page names fifteen routes and two of them are country-specific, for Thailand and for Vietnam. There is no Kenyan rail: no M-Pesa, no Airtel Money, no PesaLink. A shilling balance therefore converts through a card, an e-wallet or a wire on the way in, and converts back on the way out, because withdrawals must return to the source of the deposit.
And what holding the move actually costs. A Swap Free account replaces overnight swap with a flat published fee per lot - USD 62 a night on gold, USD 25 on US30, USD 11 on EUR/USD, USD 9 on silver - which turns a news trade held across a week into very different arithmetic from the one the chart above suggests.
