Gold at IC Markets From Kenya: USD 62 a Night to Hold It, No Shilling Rail to Fund It
Spot XAU/USD as a CFD, quoted in a currency Kenya does not appear in. Two sums decide whether the trade works from Nairobi - margin once leverage steps down by lot size, and the flat overnight fee a Swap Free position pays instead of swap. Market context, not advice.
Open IC Markets Account →Gold is the one IC Markets instrument where the Kenyan question is arithmetic rather than opinion. The quote is in dollars, one lot is 100 troy ounces, the margin rate steps down in three stages as size grows, and on a Swap Free account the overnight swap line is replaced by a flat published charge of USD 62 for every lot of XAU/USD carried through the rollover - the most expensive symbol on that whole table. Not one of those numbers has a shilling in it, and the broker publishes no Kenyan payment rail to turn shillings into them: Thailand and Vietnam have named local bank rails on the funding page, Kenya has none at all. So this page runs the two sums first and then says what it costs a Nairobi trader to get to them. CFD trading carries a high risk of losing money.

Two clocks govern a gold position opened in Nairobi: the ounce is repriced on the London and New York sessions, while your MetaTrader terminal timestamps the fill from a server in New York. The table above is the published frame, not a live quote - read spread, commission and margin off the terminal before you commit size.
Margin on gold once the leverage tiers bite
Work 30 lots of XAU/USD at an illustrative USD 4,000 an ounce, and replace that price with your own live quote before you use the answer. One lot is 100 ounces, so 30 lots is 3,000 ounces and a notional of USD 12,000,000. IC Markets applies leverage per tier, to the slice of the position sitting inside each band, rather than as one flat headline number. The first 25 lots - USD 10,000,000 of notional - fall in the 1:5000 band and lock USD 2,000. The remaining 5 lots, USD 2,000,000 of notional, fall in the 1:3000 band and lock USD 666.67. Total margin USD 2,666.67, against USD 2,400 if the headline rate applied all the way up. Stop out is 50% on every account type, so that position is closed out when equity drops to about USD 1,333.
Now set the carry beside it. On a Swap Free account the swap line is replaced by a flat published fee of USD 62 for each lot of XAU/USD held through the rollover, so the same 30 lots cost USD 1,860 to keep open for one night - close to seven-tenths of the margin the broker asked you to post, gone in a single rollover. Silver is USD 9 a lot on that table, EUR/USD is USD 11, US30 is USD 25. Gold is the outlier by a wide margin, which is why a Swap Free gold position behaves like a short-horizon instrument in practice whatever the account label says.
The gold day in Nairobi, measured against the broker's own servers
East Africa Time is UTC+3 and never moves; Kenya has run no daylight saving since 1960. The two venues that price gold do move. MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 accounts are served from the Equinix NY4 data centre in New York, which runs UTC-5 in the northern winter and UTC-4 in summer, leaving that server 8 hours behind Nairobi for part of the year and 7 hours behind for the rest. cTrader is served from London, UTC+0 then UTC+1, so that terminal sits 3 hours behind Nairobi and then 2. A trader who keeps both terminals open is watching two server clocks that drift apart twice a year while their own wall clock stays exactly where it was.
The practical effect: London bullion hours begin around 11:00 EAT in the northern winter and around 10:00 EAT in summer, and New York joins near 17:30 EAT in winter, 16:30 in summer. That is the Kenyan evening, not the Kenyan morning - the deepest liquidity in gold arrives after the Nairobi Securities Exchange has shut for the day. Higher Margin Requirement windows follow the same logic: they are defined against the trading server's own close, and because that server shifts while EAT does not, an identical window lands an hour earlier or later in Nairobi depending on the month. Take the timestamp from the terminal's Market Watch, never from a fixed rule of thumb.
Which company actually sells you the gold CFD
Kenya is one of the few markets in this group where the brand holds a local authorisation. The Capital Markets Authority register at licensees.cma.or.ke lists IC Markets (KE) Limited as a Non-Dealing Online Forex Broker under licence number 199. That is a public register entry anyone can look up, and it names a Kenyan company.
The broker's own registration feed sends a Kenyan resident somewhere else by default. Branch 3 - Raw Trading Ltd, a Seychelles company holding Financial Services Authority Securities Dealer licence SD018 - is the worldwide default door, and it is the default for Kenya too. The same feed separately carries a CMA-labelled branch and a Mauritius-labelled one, so more than one door exists and the ordinary sign-up flow picks for you. A gold position opened without asking is therefore most likely a contract with the Seychelles company, while the Kenyan licence sits on an entity that is not automatically the one on your agreement. The two are not interchangeable and only one of them answers to the CMA. Ask in writing which one is named on yours before you fund it.
Getting shillings to a dollar-denominated gold trade
IC Markets publishes fifteen funding routes. Cards, PayPal, Neteller, Skrill, wire transfer, UnionPay, Bpay, POLI, FasaPay, Rapidpay, Klarna and broker-to-broker transfer make up most of the list, and exactly two of them are country-specific: Thai internet banking and Vietnamese internet banking. There is no Kenyan entry anywhere on it. M-Pesa, Airtel Money and PesaLink do not appear on the broker's funding page in any form, and this site will not present them as IC Markets methods, because they are not.
The currency question follows from the same gap. The ten base currencies are USD, AUD, EUR, GBP, SGD, NZD, JPY, CHF, HKD and CAD; the shilling is not among them. A card issued in Kenya is billed in shillings, so a deposit crosses a currency boundary before it reaches the account, and because withdrawals must return to the source of the deposit it crosses back again on the way out. Both conversions are priced by your bank, not by the broker, which charges no deposit or withdrawal fee of its own. Two further constraints belong in the same plan: third-party payments are not accepted, so the card or bank account must be in your own name, and card withdrawals are capped at the amount that came in by card, with any excess leaving through another route you have already used or by international wire, which can run to 14 days and may pick up intermediary charges.
Four things to settle before the first gold lot
- Confirm in writing which entity your client agreement names, then check licence 199 for yourself on the CMA register rather than taking any website's word for it.
- Price both currency conversions with your own bank. No broker figure covers them, and on small position sizes they can exceed the USD 3.50 per lot per side that Raw Spread charges.
- Decide up front whether the position is a day trade or a carry. USD 62 for every lot for every night is a decision, not a detail.
- Rehearse the whole sequence on a demo, where the funding and conversion questions do not arise at all.
